"Ok. Try the other one on.
How does it feel?"
I wiggle my feet around inside the shoe on deck for scrutiny.
I shrug, "I don't know?"
"Well, walk down there. Let me see." She points to the end of the shoe aisle at Mervyn's.
I am slightly embarrassed, but I walk to the other end of the aisle.
"Does your heel slide up when you walk? Where is your toe in the end of the shoe? Come here."
I return.
"Lift up your toe so I can see where it's at."
I lift. She presses down on the toe of the shoe to determine if it is too big, too small, just right, just enough to grow a bit.
"Well? What do you think?"
I shrug. "I like them!"
"Ok! Let's just try a size bigger to see."
And the process repeats. It was quite the scrutiny for a pair of shoes.
My mother went through this process with both my sister and me each time we needed new shoes. Writing this now, I realize how fond I was of the time she spent with us making sure we had new shoes and clothes each year for school.
Hormones, maybe, but I'm tearing up! And all I wanted to do was compare the 29 point inspection that I used to undergo to determine if a pair of shoes was worthy.
Now, the only question I ask myself is, "how BAD are these going to hurt my feet?" Funny how times change.
Seriously? You’re back? No, not me, YOU are back…

I read the part about the [torture?] I put you through, all the time waiting for the other shoe to drop. (Sorry.) I teared up as well, finding out you didn't hate me for that. I continued reading and realized that as a mom I had a very definite double standard, because your criteria for shoes now is the same as mine when you were growing up. I guess I raised you right -- never can have too many shoes.
Some how I missed out on this. I still buy shoes for quality and comfort over pain and beauty. But I think that is where we diverge as sisters.
I always loved walking around with mom, with two different shoes on and getting new clothes each year for school.
Its funny the things we remember.
And now reading your comments, I'm definitely crying! I love you!!!
I have the two best daughters in the universe!
